lerk reacted to Jericoshost in Dirt on non-natural tiles should lose fertility over time
A very effective strategy in PZ is to get some dirt, and bring it to a secluded roof top, then survive indefinitely.
Or, you know... A floating fortress of anti-gravity. That, uh... Too.Yeah. 100% legit.Anyways:

A way to add some realism and balance this out would be for dirt to have a 'fertility' value that a plant draws from when harvested.
Example: you grab a dirt tile from suburbs with a fertitlity of 14. You plant potatoes which offer 30 food points (Hunger reduction = FP) Lets say we divide given hunger by 10 to determine required fertility to grow a stage, giving it 3.
Each time it grows a stage it reduces this value from the dirt's fertility.
There are 5 stages: (From wiki) Seedling doesn't count as a stage which reduces though.

1.Seedling (Don't minus for this stage)
    2.Young
    3.Fully Grown
    4.Ready to Harvest
    5.Seed-bearing

So the total reduction is 12 from 14, leaving 2.
Now, growing a plant in semi-infertile soil will cause it to give far less food, and be unable to produce seeds.
And when the infertility reaches 0, plants have a large chance to fail to grow.

    How to fix this?
Use fertiliser and/or rotten food to increase fertility. rotten food (Or even un-rotten?) will give fertility based on it's FP. Fertilizer will give a huge bonus (Imagine like +20-30)
    or:
Get new dirt, placing old dirt back on grass will allow it to slowly regain fertility over time.

Another potential way to go about this is to use a multi-fertility system, where dirt is considered to have (Lets say) 4 types of fertility. Each crop would take a bit from each type (More from some, less from others) and each crop replenishes different fertility's while taking from the others. Allowing a PC to use crop rotation like a real farmer. Though how you would do this in about 6 inches (With generous rounding) of dirt is out of my experience.

    Now about dirt:
Dirt from different areas should give different starting fertility.

Dirt from the suburbs has all of the products from the suburbs in it to start, cleaning products, gardening pesticides and weed killers, car oil, and constantly being washed out into streets (The inherent nutrients can be washed out in rain and drained into sewers instead of into more dirt.) along with many more problems inherent to suburban gardening.

Dirt from the woods is better because it has more natural decomposition depositing nutrients, more animals contributing to the nutrients, and fewer pollutants in side.

Dirt from a farm would have the highest starting fertility, as this dirt would have all the required fertilization already added, have been tended and kept clean by professionals, etc.

And if you mixed dirt types in a bag you would get mixed dirt, better than suburbs but a little less than woods.

AND (This part is important) Dirt directly connected to the ground (Grass tiles more specifically) will constantly gain 1-3 fertility per day/week up to their natural max (For that area). This dirt gains more fertility when it rains than on dry days/weeks. Over farming can still deplete this dirt, but it would take a ton of farming in a very short time.

And with farming knowledge you would be able to tell a dirt tile's fertility, but even at lvl 1 you should be able to tell when dirt is out of fertility (If for no other reason than just to stop new players from ripping out their hair and blaming the game for why there crops stopped growing for 'no reason')

So what does everyone think? I did a quick search, and looked through common suggestions but I didn't see anything.

Heya guys, I'm going to throw together a quick list of things that are commonly suggested and whether they've been mentioned by devs as tentative or no's. I'm going to be basing this off of a few threads in the old forum and the top of my head. If I miss any please mention it in the thread and I'll add it to the list.

    Key
[n] - This is a confirmed 'No' from the development team. Please don't waste your time or ours reposting unless there's something relevant and new about it
[y] - This is confirmed 'Yes' from the development team. This is something the definitely want to see in the game, but this does not constitute a guarantee. Please don't post about it unless you have something new or relevant to add.
[m] - This is a 'maybe' from the dev team. It's something they've mentioned that they were interested in but we still don't know if it's a confirmed feature. Please don't post about it unless you have something new or relevant to add.
Everything else - everything not marked would be something overwhelmingly decided by the community or that's self-evident. If you feel it needs discussion bring it up here or in a thread if there's not already one out there.

    The Big No's!
These are a list of things that are either vehemently opposed by the majority of the community, confirmed "no's" by the dev team, or impossible within the game as it is. I'm going to try to make this completely unbiased, but if you disagree with anything posted feel free to mention it. The most important ones are highlighted in red. If you take nothing else from this thread, please pay attention to these.

Please note that this list does not mean these will be in the game at release, nor does it mean the devs will ever add them. It's solely a list of features that at some point they expressed interest in. These things do not need further threads, so please refrain.

                   Cooking tools:
    ·        Steam cooker- like a microwave but able to be moved. Needs power. It steams food.
    ·        Blender- this can be moved needs power and is used to making certain drinks.
    ·        Oven- the stove is there in game but this is just another extension of that for more meals.
    ·        Spatula- used in grilling for certain foods.
    ·        Smoker- this is a big machines that needs fuel to smoke food.
    ·        Deep fryer- this needs power or fuel as well as oil to deep fry items.
    ·        Freezer- a small part of the fridge that freezes items.
    ·        Whisk- this is an item used in cooking.
    ·        Grader- This is used in cooking.
    ·        Waffle iron- this is used to turn batter in to waffles. It can be moved and needs power.
    ·        Skillet- used in cooking or a pan like weapons.
    ·        Strainer- used in cooking.
    ·        Griddle-used in cooking.
    ·        Peeler- used in cooking.
    ·        Sauce pan- used to make sauces.
    ·        Tongs- used when grilling to avoid burns.
    ·        Tupperware container- used to preserve foods expiration.
    ·        Toaster- this is like the waffle iron but toasts things.
    ·        Bottle opener- a tool to open beer bottles.
    ·        Cork opener- a tool to open wine bottles.
    ·        Plate- holds food.
    ·        Salad bowl- holds salad or more water.
    ·        Mortar and pestle. Crushing spices for food.

    New food mechanics:
    ·        Smoked- this type of food lasts longer and is cooked in a smoker. Takes a level 2 cooking skill to do so.
    ·        Grilled- this is made by cooking on grills and can be done at any level.
    ·        Steamed- this mostly applies to vegetables and some other foods.
    ·        Dried- this is applied to some meats and a few fruits. This takes a level 3 cooking skill.
    ·        Charred-this is like burnt but only worse and removes almost all the hunger value of the meal.
    ·        Fried- this need cooking skill level 2 and you can get burn until you become level 6.
    ·        Alcohol bonus- This instead makes depression go away and boost happiness to a near max while drunk. It also makes you walk in a zig zag pattern and slightly louder. While drunk however you feel less damage and fatigue slower.
    ·        The Hungover debuff- This adds some balance to being drunk. When hungover you get queasy, and are in pain until it goes away. You are also slowed and weaker. You also feel major pain when you hear loud noises. Reading becomes a bother and depression comes very quick. Although you don’t seem very hungry.
    ·        Avoiding Drunk…ness- Being well hydrated will help lessen the hangover and the drunk effect itself. Being well fed also helps to slow it. These are factors to stop it. Speeding it up also is the opposite. Being thirsty makes the hangover worse and being hungry makes becoming drunk quick and soon to be painful.
    ·        Frozen- this is like the opposite to charred. It takes longer to cook and normally is inedible at this state. Some foods like ice cream, ice, and water, still have uses.
    ·        Better illness control- this will be touched up better in another post but the general idea is that colds are shortened by having chicken noodle soups, orange juice, oranges, lemons, and stuff like that.
    ·        Small effects- Things like brain freeze slowing movement and causing pain for a short moment, sour which would make you unable to eat for a moment, spicy which would make you feel pain for a moment and raise your temperature to unpleasantly hot where milk is the only cure and any other liquids make it worse. It could also make you sweat making you slightly wet or having the sweaty effect in my clothing suggestion.
    ·        Eating properly- now I don’t want to be rude but if I had to eat food with my hands all the time I would be a little bit annoyed or somewhat less happy. So having plates or using a fork could make the player just a little bit happier.
    ·        Getting used to foods- now I feel if I eat something repeatedly I should gain less happiness from it. This way you can’t eat chips every meal for week after week.
    ·        Food nutrition- This has been debated so I think I have a happy mix. If you eat only junk for a certain time you get the skill obese until you start to eat healthier. Even if you have the counter trait that trait will be removed after a while. This will prevent this from being a problem.
    ·        Baking skill- this skill is like cooking bur for pastries, breads, and other things. Reason for difference is for more skill variance since not all cooks can bake.

Now this is just a rough draft of my general ideas but I would like to say this will be updated and more will be added. This doesn’t contain all recipes possibly with these since it has been a pain even making this many things. So some foods may be missing that you want to see. Drop a comment down below and thank you for taking the time to read this over.

    * Both syfy and Bennytheowl had helped me come up with 2 ideas in a different suggestion. These items are marked with this star and can be found here.

There will be more descriptions of the foods later but this was just the very start. sorry for the long blank list but i will fix it soon. until then suggest on!

... All you really need for this is to convert your crops into simple grain alcohol. Things like everclear are approaching 200 proof (pure alcohol) and would burn readily in just about any combustion engine. It's not perfect, but it's an imperfect world.

A distillery would give us the means to power cars and generators, if we were patient... and honestly, they're easy to make. It's not exactly rocketry (though you could turn it into one if you aren't careful.)

This is how I last had my guy perish. It was quite late, and having taken all day to cross town he found himself a small room with a chair with a solid wall behind it, with a view of the windows. Bearing in mind the danger of zombies, I had him sleep, knife in hand. As he slept with a black screen I heard a window smash. I clicked with the "stab" button a few times but he slept on, until finally being woken up by the zombie himself giving him a hug, too late to save himself from a scratch.

I know someone who wakes up whenever somebody knocks on his door. And he's not even surrounded by a population that wants him dead. I truely believe that if a person was properly afraid of people, zombie or otherwise, breaking into his room, then if he went to sleep bearing in mind the worry, and decided that if he heard a window smash then he would awaken, then if somebody did start smashing his way through his window then he would most certainly awaken, and further I would expect every healthy person to wake up if such a thing was to happen.

Eat 50+ chips -1 fitness. Chop down 100 trees weight of logs becomes 3 -> 2kg, eat 100 salads +1 quantity on vegetable crop harvest. Ranged weapons need their stats re-adjusted, nearly useless at the moment with 1 aiming, all misses or non fatal shots with all attachements. One axe is infinitely better then any ranged weapon at the moment. Also where the character is aiming down the barrel doesn't represent where bullets hit, sometimes upwards of 45° difference. Sleep deprivation & exhaustion should not be tied together this affects 5 traits and not in a good way. Accurate description of traits

Better if you take the "legs" if the chair, this and some nails would be a pretty solid weapon

    Hi all

Just a quick one, I have searched the forums but found no answer, and it almost seems intentional that freezers were left out of the game. A lot of fridges are fridge freezers these days and with the new generators added in game it does seem very logical that freezers could be operated for long periods of time. I understand if implementing freezers as an object would mean map work, but you could always add a second storage unit to the taller fridges, to act as fridge freezers.

    Any objections to this?
