You can find guns in the kindergarten, too.

Yeah, I think you're right that guns got hit somewhat too hard with the nerf bat. They used to be a good panic button; I had some fun times going nuts with a pistol, which was basically a hand held automatic headshot device. Now the only gun I bother to use is a shotgun to clear out very large hordes, and most of the time it leaves me feeling as though it was more trouble than it was worth.

Yeah, butter knives are no good for prying, they bend too easily. A flathead screwdriver works. But for the sake of elegance I'd be content with having to use a crowbar. Crowbars should be useful.

I'm absolutely certain this has been suggested at some point in the past, but the recently added lethality of smashed windows brings it new relevance. Add 'pry window' action to windows with a crowbar in inventory? Possibly not an instant success, but at least vastly increased odds over trying to force them open by hand.

I don't think PZ needs product placement that badly

I think they'd rather take 20 seconds to swap a file name to something generic than have to pay a lawyer to draft a legal agreement for a brand name use

Lightning is the leading cause of bushfires where I live. I'm still a little circumspect on the idea of fires randomly being started by lightning in game. I can see it having the potential to cause a great deal of chaos with no player agency whatsoever, which in my opinion is not a good thing. The player should get screwed over when they make a mistake, not when the game randomly decides to set stuff on fire.

You're right, it's easy enough to explain the no fish in winter thing away if you ignore reality. What I'm finding harder to explain is your overt smarmy hostility toward people pointing out that the change simply makes no sense.

Gameplay-wise it's obvious enough that the intent is to make players rely on food stores through winter. Preservation is more novelty than anything else at the moment though, since the stuff required is either limited, uncommon or both. Most players that actually intend to play a long term game won't want to rely on limited resources to survive winter, which means they'll use cooking or foraging instead. When those are both nerfed there'll need to be a sustainable preservation method to prevent the maximum length of the game from being limited to how long the nonperishables and jar lids last, unless that's the aim.

Its not that we don't want it to be harder, but we want it to be realistic and challenging (with concessions made for gameplay of course).

My earlier post detailed the inevitable problems of this change. Right now there are some issues that will hopefully be addressed.

    1. Worms - Infinite food supply all year long that doesn't rot.

    2. Trapping and Farming - Once the lids run out, these two will have very little use during the winter with the exceptions of a) Currently way too easy to obtain year round worms (which shouldn't be available during the winter) and b) level 4 and 5 cooking which, in a sense, works better than canning and would allow you to save crops year round. Problem is, once cooking and worms are addressed, farming and trapping will become useless for winter time survival. Not the worst thing possible, but perhaps something that should be addressed.

    3. Foraging - Nearly everything that comes from foraging DOES NOT ROT! On top of that, despite RJ claiming that it would be near-impossible to forage during the cold, I am still getting tons of food (and even worms!) when it is snowing. Foraging needs addressed, as it is certainly not working as intended.

So, there is the problem. If level 4 and 5 cooking, foraging, and worms are addressed, this creates a time limit on your survival game. With the assumption that level 4/5 cooking, foraging, and worms change, the only renewable food source during the winter would be fishing and possibly foraging.

Right now some things are unclear, like how much foraging was meant to be nerfed in cold weather (right now I can't tell any difference). It makes little sense to find worms/insects during the winter. On top of that, trapping is REQUIRED to have bait (we really need some baitless trap mechanics). So, once you run out of lids, you run out of veggies to use for bait (assuming worms are properly nerfed).

In conclusion, I don't want an artificial cap to be created on survival time, but right now a lot of the sources of food need to be addressed. I'm fine with nerfing fishing during the winter, but a lot of other food sources need addressing, as well as some clarification on foraging since it is NOT working as stated at the moment.

My cooktop uses gas, can be connected to an LPG canister if necessary and can be lit with a match or lighter. But I'm not in the US at all.

I would just guess there'd be the following in abundance:
    1) deer (common)
    2) black bears (uncommon)
    3) raccoons (very common)
    4) foxes (uncommon)
    5) rabbits (ubiquitous)
    6) cats (ubiquitous)
    7) dogs (ubiquitous)
    8) coyotes (uncommon)
    9) squirrels (ubiquitous)
    10) chipmunks (ubiquitous)
    11) mice/rats (common)
    12) game birds (uncommon)
    13) crows/hawks/etc (very common)

It's an interesting idea. I don't really like the idea of mutant zombies all that much myself, I appreciate that PZ's zombies are more of the classical type, but options like decomposition and the nature of infection would be fun to play with.

I didn't know what to title this topic. If the mods have a better title then you can feel free to change it. Anyway, basically make it so that instead of how you choose your beard at the start, your beard grows out as you play. The longer you live the bigger your beard. Now don't take customization away entirely but have styled beards or goatees that eventually grow into scruffy face scruff if you let it go for too long. Also allow for razors to cut your beard (since they're useless right now) same with hair.

What do you think? I always wanted a kind of status symbol if I survived for a few months.
