    I'm basing this post on Max Brooks and Romero's lore.

    The "how" is not really specified though, hopefully someone with deeper knowlege will be able to answer.

    I think the Axe has the most efficient killing power in the game, especially once you get a few points invested. Bats are also quite effective and very common. I usually don't use the hammer due to the short range but you are right, its has a good killing ratio for its low weight.

    A few weeks back I was looking into high caloric foods that could be foraged, and Honey was my best bet. Its already in game, so one less problems. What I like the most of this is that it has many possibilities:

    1. You should collect the honey from the hives.
    2. The hives could be made physical (not something you get automatically while /foraging), and make them to appear random on the map for each game.
    3. Collecting honey should have its risks: you could get in troubles with the bees if not done properly (new equipment? using cigarretes?)

    100% agree. Any survival game has to rely heavily on management, from all angles: health management, inventory, time, stamina, mood, etc. Its the beauty behind the scenario.

    Oh, and great update, by the way, thanks RJ!

    Update 9!

    Fixed some items typo Lowered a tad the calories and weight loss Weight loss is now tied to your weight, so if you're underweight you'll start to loose weight after -400 calories instead of 0, etc... Can't go under 35kg, at this point you'll start to loose health Reduced the minimum calories cap to 2800 (from 3500) so it'll be easier to gain weight after a long diet Fixed general freezing problem (age, stopping the freezing update after no electricity..) Added nutritionist trait (you can see every nutritional values on any food, fitness instructor have it for free) Can now split pasta/rice pot into bowls Fixed spawn points debug code Added freezer to big fridge Can now use bolognese in recipes

    Mmh ok, thanks a lot, gonna look into this.

    I nerfed a bit the calories reduction/weight reduction as it's main people problem, even tho I think it's gonna create problem for those who live only from looting/canned food (which is often high calories), but it should be rather ok...

    I really want people to fear the starvation.. But not at start...

    Even tho you try to live in the forest from day 1, so it maybe should be rather normal... Maybe I should increase a bit the nutrition given by the fishes/foraging goods...

    Another 14 days of survival in my approach to collect data from the beginning to the late game. I have survived 3 months now in survival mode and I could increase weight by 28 days of constantly eating. I literally spend most of the time with cooking, foraging, hunting and farming to stay well fed all the time and get some weight back. My weight is stable around 35 kg it seems I can't get higher with that diet but it is much better than the 29 kg 14 days ago. (see also the previous reports about 1.5 months and 2 months of survival.
    Further stats:
    averageCalories=775.3112
    caloriesMax=2946.7148
    caloriesMin=-3500.0

    totalFedPercentage=43
    totalStarvingPercentage=2
    totalNormalHungerPercentage=55

    totalExoPercentage=13
    totalSleepPercentage=1
    totalNormalPercentage=90

    survivalTime=2231.7559553153114

    And I also found a bug: If I eat some frozen ice cream it is replaced in the freezer by a box of melted icecream. So you can literally eat 2 box of icecream. And after the electricity shut down the food in the freezer never get unfreezed. My freezers are still in use although I have no electricity since 6 weeks now.

    Yo! Another aproach to this could be that the player gets a happiness boost when actually manages to fish something. Like in real life! You may spend hours looking at the pole in the sea (or the river), you'll get bored, but then, suddenly, the thing actually start to move and you manage to catch the poor fish and... happiness boost

    Trying to clear up confusion: Thread says game X uses some art from PZ.
    It was said few sprites were the same as in PZ; sprites that were in the game for years.
    It was never mentioned that the game is a copy of PZ.
    It was never mentioned that they stole all the art.
    It was about very few sprites - created specifically for Project Zomboid - being used in the linked game.
    Developers of Game X were approached and apparently they've gotten the sprites from some art package for RPG Maker.
    Developers of Game X will replace sprites in question for the next update.
    This concludes this topic, I guess.

    This is going to be a really interesting thread

    I have a nutritionnist degree, and although its not what I do for a living, is a topic that really drives me crazy, specially with all the intentional missinformation flying around to make people eat worst every passing day.

    Nutrition itself is a pain in the ass IRL. You really need to pay attention to what nutritients are you putting in your body... In all meals. I struggle with it enough in my life so I'm curious about what level of "realism" will PZ pack in this regard. I'd go for a relatively simple system, based specially on food freshness and variety. As long as you are eating "a bit of everything" you should be fine. Bonus and malus should come from a diet based only on canned foods, or lack of different foods.

    In game, besides what you can find in the fridges (which eventually rottens, so let's discard those) we have:

    - Vegetables  (low on carbs, really low on protein and lipids, high in nutritients and fiber)
    - Fish (high in proteins and lipids)
    - Meat (high in proteins and lipids)
    - Insects (high in protein)
    - Fruits (high in nutritients and carbs)

    Basically (IRL) you must consume lipids, you must consume proteins, and you have to control the amount of carbs (specially sugar based) you consume. The carbs are not mandatory, proteins and lipids are (the former builds your muscles and the latter is the basic energy source and its crucial for your internal organs). Carbs help providing energy... but they are not as mandatory as the industry has been telling the world they are. Anyway this topic would get too complex if we jump into these details so let's leave it there  In my opinion the fact that the player will have to worry about getting sources of protein is awesome. It will give the hunting and fishing skills the importance they should have in a post apocaliptic scenario. Farming is a great source of food and nutritients, but someone living of vegetables only for a long time will for sure present some muscle deficiencies, unless they get access to soy, peanuts and other vegetables with high protein values (which are really not that many, and more importantly, they are not in the game -yet-). Someone eating only canned food would surely present deficits in essential nutrients, leading to all kind of healthy issues, from depression to loss of strenght

    How could this work on PZ? I picture a system with a progress bar that goes from Low to High in terms of good eating. Each direction gives you bonus or malus.

    A player would start in the middle of the bar (this could be also based on your traits: if you are a chef, or a nutritionist, or a fitness instructor it would be closer to the "high", and if you are obese, to the "low" area, for example).

    The player "level" of nutrition should move slowly, both ways. Meaning that if you have been eating poorly for a month, if you start eating healthy it would take you a similar amount of time to get back to "normal", and double to get to "high", and viceversa.

    Eating should affect your basic traits as well: you won't retain your "strenght" values if you don't eat enough proteins. Or you could get rid of your "obese" trait if you have been eating healthy for months.

    And this are my two cents for now. Gotta get back to work!

    Update 2!

    Added icons for the new traits (not definitive icons!) Added new traits descriptions You now can't eat if you're well fed Fixed weight-related trait sometimes not being updated in character info screen Changed single berry in a bunch of berries Added pasta & rice (they are evolved recipes, lot of food can be added in them, you need a water pot to prepare them) Added several foods to evolved recipes (canned foods can now be added to recipes, etc...) Fixed cutting fish filet not adding nutritional values Fixed unfit/out of shape being good traits Well fed moodle will stay bit longer Fixed some evolved recipes incorrect numbers Reduced speed of gaining/losing weight Calories to gain weight is now based on your weight (the more you have weight, the more calories is needed to gain weight) You know start at 800 calories (previously 500) Fixed Emaciated trait having wrong value Fixed nutrition values in food tooltip being displayed in green Fixed nutrition value of base item (cake preparation, pie dough..) not being added in evolved recipe Balanced some nutrition values

    Ohbal reacted to Crotchfire in Radical suggestion: eliminate skill points entirely, as well as skill point barriers.
    Maybe this is too radical, I don't know.  But here's the thought:

    All skills could be continuous, and all effects thereof could be as well.  XP would remain pretty much the same, with whatever tweaking you'd like.  Instead of blocks, you just have one long progress bar that increases more slowly the longer it is.

    Instead of having, say, 6 points in strength and being 3% of the way to 7 points and having your carry weight remain at 14 until you hit that final bit of xp, you'd have a progress bar that would translate to a max carry weight of 14.03.

    You could keep those arbitrary skill point cutoffs for crafting certain things, OR you could make everything from the start with hilariously disastrous results.

    Wanna make stairs with no experience in carpentry?  SURE!  Just don't be surprised when it collapses under your dumb ass, breaking your ankle and giving you all sorts of cuts and scrapes and now you wish you'd gotten that tetanus shot.

    Want to make a salad from your rotten food with no cooking experience?  SURE!  Just don't be surprised that it gives you food poisoning.

    Want to make a rain barrel with no experience in carpentry?  SURE!  Just don't be surprised that it leaks out all the water it catches and you just wasted all your materials.

    It would be quite an overhaul, I suspect, but I also think there are some (occasionally hilarious) possibilities here.

    I find it strange that we can sleep on a chair and get the same quality rest as sleeping in a bed, it's pretty unrealistic and I've seen quite a few people talk about adding something to fix this.

    So my suggestion is quite simple, while we could have some complex system that will effect your character in the long term from sleeping on nothing but wood chairs and while that would be ideal a, much simpler method is to make sleeping on stuff like chairs decrease your tiredness at a slower rate, so that you would require more sleep if want to become fully rested. Basically giving your character the restless sleeper effect when sleeping on chairs. And obviously sleeping in a bed would be the best choice and your character would need less sleep to be fully rested.

    Items with missing calories:

    Remoulade (depends on size going with 400g based on the fact that bottle is 0.5 full and 0.1 empty which would be 2400, 240 lipis, 53.3 carbs).  Would increase BoredomChange to at least 30 and UnhappyChange to at least 30 (like ketchup).

    Chardonnay (Wine) (481 calories, weight should go up to 1 (bottle 0.3 + liquid 0.7),  [all calories are from alcohol]

    Red Wine (Wine 2)  (510 calories, weight should go up to 1 (bottle 0.3 + liquid 0.7), [all calories are from alcohol]

    Whiskey (1543 calories, weight should go down to 1 (bottle 0.3 + liquid 0.7) or WiskeyEmpty should go up. [all calories are from alcohol]

    Almost done modifying the list of suggested calories from the farming.txt, items.txt and newitems.txt files in my copy of the game.

    Yup, below 30 in males and 25 females should be the doorstep to dying... and those guys could barely move so they would be death way earlier in PZ

    My guess is that a survival character will really depend on farming potatos, which will be the main calorie source. And a survivalist with hearty apetite sounds like nightmare mode to me

    The other source for calories would be fruits, but we don't have them yet.

    On this topic, does someone knows the nutrition value of the potatos, carrots, tomatoes, cabbages.... etc, the value of the vegetables we can grow in game? I will get into testing later, but is going to take some time to see the first crops.

    At some point I guess there will be bigger animals than rats and birds to catch with the hunting skill. Those should serve as a protein source... and I keep telling you guys, a diet rich in insects is the future
