Ontogenesis got a reaction from Sieben in Dealing with depression and moodswings
Everyone can experience depression differently, and are bothered by some things more. Was there a specific thing you wanted advice on? Or is the general advice ok?

I can offer the more professional side advice, I currently work as a psychologist in a child and adolescent MH service. I will write a post later tonight when I get some time with some more generic psychological stuff. However, others advice can be equally, if not more, useful at times. Can be powerful abd hopeful to hear you're not the only one and people can get through it. Although, what works for others might not work for you and visa versa, some could actually make you feel worse. It really depends on you, your context, your depression, what is maintaining, what has caused it etc.

I suffer from clinical depression & social anxiety disorder. In fact, I'm in the middle of a depression episode right now. It sucks.
Treatment is available, and it helps tonns. Meds are a pain in the neck, but worth it to take the edge off. Counselling etc is worth it.
I would strongly recommend watching this, which explains a lot about what they think is going on with depression:
Also, if others are having trouble understanding what you're going through, ask them to play Depression Quest. It's free, on Steam and online, and is the best depiction of what it's like I've come across. Play it yourself as well if you want, but don't be surprised if it hits you hard.
Edit:
Also, escaping reality via games, books, tv shows you love is *totally* acceptable, useful, and a way for you to get your brain to shut up and leave you be for a bit. It's invaluable to help process, I cannot impress enough how useful gaming has been to me keeping an even keel. Don't think it's bad, it's totally *not*.
If you're escaping reality for 99% of the time, that's when it's bad, but 10-20% is fine. Seriously though, do go see a doctor, help *is* available, and it's worth it.

One of the best things I've ever seen on the subject is this World Health Organisation video on depression. It's wonderfully done, and is also extremely helpful in explaining how depression works/feels to non-sufferers.

I've been suffering from depression on and off for the last couple years. It sucks. I'd suggest listening to the people above and seeking some professional help.

I sought professional help on the advice of Kirrus and I won't say it will help you, since different people, different minds but it certainly did me a world of good.

I've been hanging around here for over 2 years now - definitely one of the best communities I've seen. Thanks to you guy at the Indie Stone for carrying on when the shit was happening, there are some that would have quietly dropped the project with the setback and backlash. Now, tomorrow you're on Steam. At least all the ups and downs will make a good story at the end of the day? Better than, we decided to make a game and made it, woo.
Anyhoo, it's been fun.

Ontogenesis got a reaction from EnigmaGrey in Windows 10
Installed last night. Works very nicely on my surface pro, much better than 8.1 and glad they got rid of that pointless tile screen. Apart from being a bit slicker and the start button being back, I don't notice too much different.

Ontogenesis reacted to SpazzMan502 in Zombies Setting Off House Alarms?
I think it would be great if zombies were able to set off house alarms, creating another sort of Meta Game Event. Not exactly zombies that spawned in the house, but zombies that are trying to break in to get to you, or etc.
It would be spooky spawning into a fresh world and a few minutes later hearing a distant siren going off and many zombies going towards it.
Speaking of spookiness and Meta Game Events, a few days ago I heard a freaking female scream when I spawned. The I quit the game. 2spooki4me

Would that work? I wouldn't think a molotov would have the kind of explosive power to project nails. Other bombs though. And ballbearings

Ontogenesis reacted to Kirrus in Depression downsides
Aye, hallucinations might be from chronic insomnia, or drugs, but not typically depression. Coming off an anti-depressant cold turkey *might* give you hallucinations, but the other symptoms would be apt to all but knock you out anyway.
Crying really isn't something that will happen a lot when you're depressed, typically you cry just as you're going into an episode, or recovering;

Less panic would make sense, emotionally you are numbed, but also, you definitely don't take care of yourself as well, and ennui doesn't even begin to cover it. Maybe a darkening of the edges of your vision, vision changes, and lack of perception, to cover lack of attentiveness to your surroundings.

not at all. beta blockers are prescribe before benzos usually as they are non addictive and entirely unabuseable. being on them lowers your blood pressure though, since that is another on label use for them. Some people get lightheaded when standing up suddenly on them. Overdosing causes bradycardia, the heart doesn't pump enough blood, which is why the lightheadedness can occur, though to a lesser extent in that case. Another anxiety med is hydroxzyine. Probably butchered the name. It's an antihistamine with a very high propensity for making people drowsy. I'm fairly certain it's unabusable, non addictive but since it's an antihistamine im betting tolerance could build up easily.
Tl;dr: beta blockers and hydroxz are not addictive and far more common than benzos.
edit: the painkillers should be. They act way too effectively to possibly be a non opiod anaglesic.

Ontogenesis got a reaction from Svarog in Drugs
The devs have said before they'd like to include drugs (I remember lemmy talking about a heroin addict survivor). I think they have an interesting element to add - short term benefits vs long term costs. Think adding addiction would be great. Psychotropic meds also have similar issues, particulary hypnotics (i.e. sleeping pills) and benzodiazapines. IRL they have very small prescibing times due to these issues. Even using benzos PRN can lead to coping atrophy without physical dependence.

Ontogenesis got a reaction from Kirrus in Views on recreational drug use
My 2 cents on this issue. To give my position context, I work in mental health and the most times I come across drugs (including alcohol) is when they're misused to avoid/cope with problems/negative feelings.
Alcohol has it's position as one of the most harmful as it is the most easily accessible. My qualms about legalisation and regulation is that it would make other drugs more widely accessible and increase access for those who are vulnerable to misuse who otherwise would have less opportunity. Personal responsibility is not a clear issue as it assumes every decision we make is rational and conscious, all of the time, which is completely not true. You might say it's personal choice, but with systems like the NHS we all pay.
That aside, cannabis is fairly harmless, and should probably be legal. Although dependency is still an issue (more psychological than physical), and it is known to exacerbate mental health problems. Though, there's some interesting research currently ongoing at the moment with CBD (one of the psychoactive ingredients of cannabis) as a treatment for schizophrenia. There's also trials with LSD as a treatment for depression but I'm a bit more skeptical of.
On a side note - I personally believe benzos should never be prescribed for anxiety disorders, especially panic attacks. They're known to maintain the problem and are extremely unhelpful in the long term and can cause an atrophy in coping skills.
