Day 1: Ran half way across the town just to get to the Pile'o'crepes. Hopefully I can wall it off and live there. I found this book and thought i should begin writing in case something happens. I've taken up refugee in a house close by to the Pile'o'crepes, I'll clear zombies out and move in once I've finished barricading everything.

Day 3: went to investigate the pile'o'crepes and discovered and enormous horde. I was luckily able to escape and even more move them away from the shopping district. Things are looking up, I might be able to actually pull this off.

Day 4: Damn it! gunshot lured the zombies right through my safehouse. I was barely able to make it out alive. Right now about 20 zombies stand between me and all my suppies. I am currently hiding in the pile'o'crepes but realize I can't stay here for long. With no where to sleep I will eventually pass out. I need to find somewhere to sleep, perhaps one of the other stores will have chairs I can sleep in, I can only hope.

This kind of setup doesn't limit your game to a single score, it does however give you details on how you lived. While one person might have survived 4 years 34 days and 20 hours another might have walked 1768 miles and another might have killed 2375 zombies and 500 survivors. one might have befriended all the NPCs and owned a fort having a miniature society in the middle of zombie territory, over 500 structures built (individual walls etc).

Point is there is no winner or better player because each character will have their strong and weak points. things they did better and things they did worse. This system is meant to reflect that as a wall to remember characters, instead of judging them.

I personally wouldn't like this at all. Cinematic point of view yes it builds tension and makes the view more exciting, in a game it would just be plain annoying. If there was a specific avoidable system in which players could avoid tripping then maybe. But otherwise it is a bad game mechanic as rath has said.

clumsiness in general is very precarious for games. It's rated on par with, and is often mistaken for, glitch/badly made controls.

TinnedEpic got a reaction from Strider in Seasonal Offerings & Food Preservation.
So this is essentially 2 ideas in one, and fair warning it's pretty complex.

    Explanation:
Increasingly, discussion has been going on about seasons and their major role in PZ. I've covered a minor topic before discussing the implementation of fruit trees which lead me to research the idea of Kentucky having a seasonal cycle of foods. I re-watching David Attenborough's "The opportunists" and how some animals are driven by a very strict seasonal cycle. Specifically coming to mind is the Grizzly Bear which spends it's entire life taking advantage of opportunities, following 1 big event after another until it's fat enough to survive winter.

This is what my thread it about, a carefully defined seasonal cycle that makes available a whole succession of foods that a player can live off. So I spent some time tracking down foods that become available in different seasons in kentucky.

However it's not nearly good enough to live off the land on a seasonal cycle, late autumn & winter brings with it extremely hard times with no food sources available. So Players need a way to preserve food, build stockpiles for winter. With luck a player will have stockpiled enough food to allow themselves to survive the coming winter. If not, they face starvation and will be forced to desperately scrounge food from a picked city or try find an NPC to raid food from.

    Seasonal Offerings
As the seasons progress from spring to summer to autumn to winter an array of different foods could become available. A Succession of foods which not only drive you to exploit as many different food sources as possible, in many different ways, but will also bring other animals out to play. The best way to describe what I mean is to go through each of the individual seasons and describe which foods are avaliable and for how long.

    Spring -
A time of plenty, spring has the largest quantity of food however only in the later months. This is kind of the season when plants are flourishing again and starting back up. Additionally this causes animals to return from the migrations south. So while plants are still flourishing, animals may be your source of food.

     - Fish

    - Lemons (if they bloom late)
    - Fish
    - Squirrels (population hindered by snakes)
    - Rabbits (population hindered by snakes)
    - Rats*

    Autumn -
Autumn is the berry and fruit season. It's in autumn that plants finally shed themselves of their seeds and prepare for the hardships of winter. During this season wildlife is also stocking up for winter, this is the season of preparation where a lot of long lasting foods become available. However it's a good idea to grab it quickly because mid autumn these sources stop producing foods and then begins that hardest time of the year.

    - Rats*

    Winter -
Winter is the season of hardship, barely any foods are available. Some animals may remain, however they will be extremely rare. Every food bearing plant has now shed it's leaves and shut down for the winter, to prevent frost damage. During this time the players will just have to sit back and try ride it out on whatever food sources they have left, and make the most of any opportunity they come across. Really the entire year up till now has been preparation for this moment. Crops have an extreme amount of difficulty growing, thus if you don't wanna starve to death you had better stockpile as much food as possible.

    What becomes available for eating?
    - Fuck all....

    Rare but still available:
    - Rabbits
    - Squirrels
    - Fish
    - Deer
    - Rats*

    Food Preservation
Late Autumn, Winter and Early Spring are the hardest times to survive. Mainly because food is just starting to drop off the menu, no new foods become available and when they do start blooming again they won't be ready to eat for a while. In winter animals migrate further south to continue feeding in the normal means. What does this mean for players? That sustainable foods are no longer available and their gonna have to try survive with what they got. Of course it's not good having a stockpile of food if it's gonna go bad within 2 weeks or less. You need some way of preserving your supplies.

But power to fridges only lasts 1 month, it's not going to help you in anyway during winter. Naturally as the temperature dips uninsulated foods will benefit from a semi-cooled state. But without proper preservation techniques or an abundance of long life foods it's unlikely your food will last long enough to keep you alive through the hard winter months. So how does a player preserve foods without a refrigerator?

With an ingenious idea, a natural refrigerator. Animals of all kinds exploit them to keep themselves active throughout the winter months. Beavers use lakes to refrigerate wood, foxes and other dogs bury their food to sustain them through hard times.

Food rots according to 3 factors; Temperature exposure, light exposure & oxygen exposure. *shouldn't be incorporated into the game, just a fyi thingy-ma-doodle o.o*

    Burial Refrigeration -
Food wrapped in a cloth, towel, plastic bag or container will be able to be buried for later. Burying food is a somewhat modest way of preserving food. The ground underneath the soil cool and stable. Foxes specifically use this method to store food and preserve it during the winter months when hunting isn't so good.

    Water Refrigeration -
If you place food in an airtight container you can store food in bodies of water. Food preserves best in water because water temperature is significantly cooler than the outside environment. Beavers use this to keep active throughout winter and it's highly effective, it's in fact one of 7 reasons they build dams.

Bodies of water could include lakes or rivers, or even a barrel of water like a rain collector. However it has to be a deep pool of water. Anything shallow will not preserve food.

    Salt
Kentucky doesn't have any salt water lakes or access to the ocean. So salt sources are pretty scarce, but salting foods can help preserve them. Especially if you plan to bury them or dunk them in water. This has been suggested before.

-Salt can be found in restaurants and houses.

Obviously portable generators are planned for the future, and refrigerators will become plausible through winter. Refrigerators are better than any of the methods suggested above, however generators require fuel and since it's a finite resource it's not really plausible that you can run a generator indefinitely. That and generators are loud. So naturally this alternative has it's ups and downs, while it might not be as good as refrigeration it's still plausible enough to use once all power has gone out.

Might make Melbourne city, it's got some good residential zones and high rise buildings all relatively close to one another. Although in order to do that I'd first have to wait for salt water to become a thing. Can't make the bay without the correct water, after all if I make it normal water people can just go to the bay for a drink xD.

An ongoing Survival Guide, by TinnedEpic.

Welcome! First thank you so very much for clicking on this thread and checking out my survival guide. Before I begin ranting on there are a few things I need to say:

    <-------------------------------------------->
Firstly, much of what I have written is subject to objection or differing opinions among players. All I can say to that is this are the tips and tactics I use to survive, this is how I personally play and for me it works. My way is not the only way. I am by no means closed minded either, I take all suggestions/advice onboard. If you wish to discuss/dispute/suggest content within this guide I highly encourage it. Sharing of strategies and ideas is exactly what a guide is all about. Chances are someone out there will have a better way of doing something and it's no good to anyone if they hold it back. (Unless they want to keep it a secret, in which case I have only one thing to say to that person... Grawr!) Secondly, everything in this guide is subject to change. As I play I learn new things or I learn better techniques from watching/reading other people I may change or add things to the guide to make it better. Even as the game updates and adds more content/challenges/changes I will need to adjust the material accordingly. It's very much an evolutionary thing. Thirdly, SPOILERS! HEAVY SPOILER ALERT! This guide will contain detailed information on project zomboid and how to survive. While it possibly may be helpful, it may also take the fun out of the game for you not begin able to experience it first-hand yourself. I implore you, only look up sections you are having trouble with. These guides are meant to help new players overcome challenges, however can routine aspects of the game. I encourage that new players who have been using this guide after a while should break away from it and try new things constantly and even take risks you normally wouldn’t take. THIS IS YOUR FIRST WARNING, If you do not want aspects of the game ruined for you I encourage you do not read them. Fourthly, while English is my first and only language, I suck at it... If you find spelling or punctuation errors please point them out (I have proof read it, however I'm not willing to trust myself to pick up on every mistake). <-------------------------------------------->

If you're new, welcome to the game! Keep in mind this guide may contain spoilers so if you want a genuine experience I highly recommend you play the game first and then come back to this thread if you’re having trouble. Otherwise I'll try and explain things as in-depth and clearly as I can, I hope you find this helpful.

If you're un-new, welcome anyways... Hope you enjoy the guide . If you want to discuss/question/debate content feel free to. I hope you find this helpful and enjoyable.

If your looking for another, slightly less spoiler filled guide I recommend EreWeGo's Guide to Project Zomboid. The similarities of our guides are notable however purely coincidence. Just go's to show great minds think alike. Anyways if you want a more technical run down than an opinion piece (like my own) of Project Zomboid I suggest checking this out over my own:

    <-------------------------------------------->
Just letting you know now, the reason I made this guide was because I felt like giving something like this a go. I am not by means an 'expert' but I do consider myself experienced. I do sincerely hope that this helps people grow and learn from what I suggest and thus allow them to prolong their inevitable death. If you want me to link your guide in my post I will be most happy to do so. Sharing is caring .
This guide took 4 weeks to complete and consists roughly on 10,900ish words. Kudos if you read it all.

Just spent the money on it today. Well worth a few hours of play, and will likely be truly fantastic later on.

I do see one major problem for the longevity of the game, though: Even on the biggest map there's not a whole lot of resources, and the major resource is essentially non-renewable. The only way to keep it long term is going to be trading food for metal, but being (really) the only two resources it's a pretty shallow system to cover a pretty big design flaw. Will be interested in seeing where Tynan goes with it.

So naturally this alternative has it's ups and downs, while it might not be as good as refrigeration it's still plausible enough to use once all power has gone out.

I know there have been similar suggestions/topics brought up in the past, if I missed a major thread forgive me I did start this post last night at 2am. Not all information is 100% accurate, most of it was adapted to suit game-play rather than realism. I've tried to keep it as realistic as possible however.

I do believe we need Jam added to the game... for jam sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches and the infamous Peanut butter and Jam sandwich!

If you build it, it may be safe from zombies spawning within. If other npc groups build it, no zombies will spawn within.
But I can say with reasonable confidence that there will never be a zone that just magically repels zombies. Barriers are breakable, doors are destructible, barricades can be ripped apart or climbed.
Having it any other way is not only gamey and silly, it also defeats the entire point of the game.

The Interface is, well to put it bluntly klunky and somewhat aesthetically displeasing. I think with the work on major gameplay features interface has been less a priority understandably. I would be 100% in favour of a user interface remodel. In fact i might draft an idea tomorrow .

You can climb out windows by pressing and holding "e" while facing them if you're not aware.

Also, the right click sensitivity is currently one of the things being worked on and it will be a bit less buggy soon. A full overhaul of the clicking system wouldn't be practical right now due to the upcoming change to 3D (which will change how clicks are logged), but rest assured they are getting a bit better.

It seems like it would break immersion a bit. It's the same problems I have with movies and games that tell you that you should care about a character or that two characters love each other but never show you.
A good example is the Star Wars remakes. You're told countless times that anakin and padme are in love, but they never seem like they're in love. It's an unpleasant experience for the player/viewer and seriously breaks immersion.

Pelts/caveman style jackets/coats I'm not in favour of. Simply put there are plenty of other options for getting warm, wearing half rotting skins with little bits of fat clinging to it isn't the first option that comes to mind (Read 'Hatchet' you'll understand). Atm I'm more incline to just stick to gathering food for animals.

That's an Ocean Sunfish. I'm talking about this:
Also known as brim, bream, perch, bluegills, and any number of other local names.
