Not quite the t-shirt I brought to Rezzed last year but something I'm going to be carrying around proudly for the next 3 years

True and these days even most of the regular car tanks are locked and you can't really get to those without busting them (or opening from inside the vehicle in some cases), but that's not too difficult. Personally I'd go look for regular truck's tanks as they're really easy to break into and they hold a lot of diesel (worth 2-5 regular car tanks . . . it depends on stuff) and are usually at least half way full. You either just have to use some force with your hand or put in a screwdriver and wedge it over. Would be kinda nice game mechanic too. To open a gas tank you'd need a screwdriver, crowbar or a sturdy knife that can handle sideways bending. Then you could siphon the tank. Or just be able to get into the car. Many cars have a button to open the tank if it's locked. either way I guess.

Hmm... Now I'm thinking I'm giving tips on how to steal gas...  Somebody tell me if this is over the line and I'll try to edit some out.

Gas shouldn't be too much of a problem. The underground tanks at a gas station hold a huge amount. I did some research and the smallest tanks made for storing gasoline in gas stations can hold 5,000 gallons. That's a lot of gas. Enough so that there'll probably be a few hundred gallons left which will be accessible for as long as there is power. All you gotta do is go inside and tell the cash register there was a purchase. And if there isn't any power, you can just hook a generator up to the building to get the pumps working again. And, if we're really lucky, there might be a refueling tanker truck nearby capable of holding up to 11,000 gallons of gasoline.

Even under apocalyptic circumstances, I'd find it perfectly believable to say about a fifth of all gasoline is still in storage. If we assume a refueling tanker was parked at the gas station when the world went to shit, that's a lot of gasoline. Enough gasoline for all the local survivors to make use of for a long damn time, and that's not even counting all the gas that might still be left in all of the wrecked vehicles and cars abandoned on the highway. Get a small siphon pump and that's a fair amount of gas that can be plundered. The ability to procure gasoline for our vehicles isn't an issue here.

And so what if the roads are jammed? Like I said before, there are a fair number of vehicles that perform admirably on most terrain types. Any vehicle with four wheel drive is going to be just fine. Going off road isn't a huge problem for them. And even if you can't go off road and the roads are clogged you can still invest the effort into clearing them. The metal in a vehicle would make for excellent building and crafting materials. I can actually see various survivor groups going to war over stretches of highway, fighting each other for the rights to dismantle and harvest the scrap metal from all the abandoned cars. After some time the roads will be perfectly fine to drive on with whatever functioning vehicles that happen to be left. So long as you avoid the potholes or take some time to empty a bag of dirt or gravel into them, anyway.

I, myself, would like some cars here and there. Would fill those empty garages.
Of course, a cool tiny debuff would be that there's a chance of a zombie already being in the said car and giving you a lovebite because you weren't careful enough.

It's not how ineffective they'd be, but rather how balanced and realistic. The fact that there's a risk just makes it more fun and exciting.

And then you could hang a flashlight to the ceiling using a rope and treat it as some sort of ''modern art'' lamp thing.

Hey, they let us drink bleach to die stupidly. Why not let us die a horrible flamey-explosion death, too?
