First look at our Zombie Apocalypse

Well that whole “Project Secreto” thing didn’t exactly last for all that long. Nope, balls to secrecy – we’ve got food that needs buying.

Survive the zombie apocalypse directly in your browser. The first release will be completely free to play to give you a taster of things to come.

  • Zombies are alerted by sight, smell, sound, and other zombies. Creep around silently staying in cover – being spotted by one zombie leads to another, and another, and another. While the proper zombies can be outrun easily, the horde is another deal entirely.
  • Teaming up with other survivors is a good strategy for defence, but they all need food too and tensions within the group need to be dealt with. Can you really be certain that one of them isn’t hiding a bite from you?

  • Best not leave those bodies lying around or you’ll risk disease. A whole heap of corpses outside your safe-house isn’t exactly brilliant for team morale either. But burying the dead is time consuming, while burning them lights a beacon identifying your presence.

  • Getting trapped in a building can be disastrous, but you need somewhere safe to sleep and store your gear. Best barricade up the place and defend your position.
  • Using a full body damage system, leaping out of a second storey window might be your only option but you’ll not get far with a broken leg.

  • Fight off the horde using weapons ranging from baseball bats, spades, and planks of wood to the effective but noisy ranged weapons such as pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Anything you can get your hands on will do. But be careful with close-combat melee weapons since just one scratch means doom.

How long will you survive?

More detailed information can be found on Lemmy’s Blog.

Please note the first cut-down version will be free, in an effort to attract interest in the game, but subsequent releases beyond bug fixes will be a paid-alpha branch and it is this you will have lifetime access to.
If you cannot afford to buy, then please help spread the word.

Please note that the first taster version will be free in an effort to attract interest in the game.

  1. Looks pleasingly like X-Com bumped into the Sims and had sexy grown up children.

    But on acid, obviously.

I hope that this is massively successful and encourages people to generally support more of this kind of thing. The begging that is, not the game.

  2. Zombies look like aliens. Fix that and it’ll be golden in my book. Try and make that dynamic so while one zombie might have hair, another might not. They’re zombies so give them a little visual attitude (guts, blood stains, hanging eye ball..etc).

  3. Hi DeathfireD,

The zombies are all currently bald because they will eventually be built out of component parts so that they can reasonably match the character from which they turned. So I’ve made them bald so that I can easily add hair and whatnot later. All those other details will come later too once we start adding specific zombies rather than just having this generic one everywhere.

    Cheers 🙂

At the moment, no set plans for multiplayer as there’s a tonne of work in getting the depth of singleplayer gameplay that we’re after. However we wouldn’t ever rule anything out for certain at this point – but it would likely be some way into the future if it happened.

    1. hopefully the near future. the market for multiplayer gaming, especially with a game like this, shouldn’t be ignored (or at least placed higher on the priority list once the single player is fleshed out enough for a free beta). i’m sure 99% of the minecraft gamers out there play for the multiplayer, only because an always-evolving game like this was meant to be played online. just my .02 cents. can’t wait to try this one out though!

    2. ps – even with a concrete storyline for single player (which you guys had already stated won’t be the case exactly), the game should be ported online, which will probably happen eventually. but trust when i say that you will get 10x more support and donations once the multiplayer talks start up.

have you guys looked at similar games like urbandead and the like? they had some nice features and really focused on leveling up a character and making class-specific skills that you could level up.

      1. Yeah, I daresay you’re right. It’s definitely something to look into once all the structure, gameplay mechanisms, and a decent amount of the art is in place since we couldn’t have multiplayer without those same things in place anyway.

We’ve not had any time recently to look too much into all the other zombie games out there since we’ve got a pretty clear idea of where we want to go. But we’ll definitely look into it at somepoint – UrbandDead is not one I’d heard of before, to be honest.

        1. After you look at Urban Dead, while having many terrific gameplay mechanisms is painfully slow paced, you should check out another version adapted from Urban Dead that was much more enjoyable, Quarantine 2019.

    1. Wooo! Thanks Khan – don’t worry about the email, it comes through on the Paypal transaction, so you’ve just reminded me to remove that bit from the blog post 😉

      Thanks again 🙂

  5. I’ve included a message with the donation with the email addy I’d prefer to use, hopefully I can send a little more your way when we’re a little more comfortable.

Now go buy some food or something!

  6. Your game intrigues me.

I give to you, 8.13 of my Canadian dollars. (It did the math for me, £5)

    Godspeed.

  7. I really want to donate, I’m just worried that you guys will abandon the project and I’ll be left $8+ poorer. Tell me why I won’t be disappointed?

  8. @cbono360: Providing we have a roof over our heads, and food in our bellies, we will continue developing and expanding this game until our fingers bleed and our eyes fall out. 😉

    🙂

    1. Almost definitely. Basically, “yes”, unless we get hit by a bus or completely run out of money or something else disastrous happens.

At some point, it won’t be a donation but a fixed price for the free-future-updates-for-life thing, but that’s about the only thing likely to change in the foreseeable future.

  9. I decided to go a little crazy, donated £8 instead of $8…
That whole extra £3 should buy you an extra sandvich, now get back to programming monkey boy, I want to kill zombies! lol

Actually, short of the screenshots, this is first I have seen of it, so donated on a hunch.
    Don’t let my hunch down.

    1. You’ll be pleased to know that I am currently eating a biscuit – a Ginger Nut, to be specific, because it dunks well in coffee 🙂

Thanks very much for your support, we can’t wait to get the first version released so we’re working as fast as humanly possible (except right this second, because I’m still eating the aforementioned biscuit).

  10. ahh yes a proper zombie survival game is what i’ve been wanting…donated and lot of luck on this project!

  11. Question:

are you guys gonna give progress reports and mass email them to donaters/investors?

    if so, how frequent?

That’s it, good luck with everything!

    1. Hi Ken,

Yes, this is actually something we considered and discussed. We didn’t want to annoy everyone by sending emails every time we added something little, but we thought it would be good to send some info out for a few of the more interesting additions. If only as a little thankyou, it would be a nice gesture.

There’s a few things that need doing server-side to do that – which is something down on the list of priorities seeing as we’re trying to get the initial teaser version out as soon as possible.

In the meantime, there’s always our forums (http://theindiestone.com/community/) where we’re posting little bits and bobs from time to time 🙂

      Cheers,

      Binky

  12. I’m rooting for this game is the best of all time!
