Best anti-theft strategy to build a base

Here is a PZ objective

Intro

Popular PVP multiplayer build 32.16 server with and PlayerSafehouse is turned off.

Guess you have safe place in the forest where you would like to build a small base for

1. Keeping all your stuff together. You just can't keep it at bags in different locations still.

2. Have a roof to hide from the rain

You have enough locks, padlocks and materials. Carpentry skill is 3 for example.

Your main goal is to protect your stuff from other players.

Questions

What way of further building/crafting will you proceed?

What hacks and tricks you implement to protect your valuable stuff?

I will make a gigantic fort with layers of security, traps, and tons of food and materials inside.

I will then go to sleep in real life, wake up, and jump on Project Zomboid only to be greeted by my base being replaced by a shit ton of planks on the floor and an IOU letter.

take an already existing building like the giga-mart and sledge down the stairs and live upstairs leaving no sign a hobo lives upstairs. If you want to up that security make a wooden bridge stretch around the supervisor box and place your boxes there before sledging the floor away keeping your boxes out of line of sight.

I pride myself on my thieving skills in game, if I see a base i'll get in. So you've gotta keep people from seeing the base. Above Gigamart is so obviously dumb to build your base in such a high traffic area. it rocks!

Jack, I'm not native english-speaker. Do you mean GigaMart construction still or any new box structure? As I can't figure out what is the supervisor box and where do I need to pull a bridge?

This got me thinking... Is it possible to hide a (indoors) sheet rope behind "solid" objects that the player can sort of walk through, like certain types of furniture? Probably not, but might be worth a try.

In truth, there is no such thing as true security for a base because anything one player can build another player can circumvent.  They can build ladders to reach the heights or go over a wall; they can sledge or axe things apart.  The best you can hope for is to annoy and delay (but never defeat) a player with passive defenses.  Active defenses - IE being in your base and willing to kill the intruder - is the only absolute way to deny a player access to a location, and of course that only works for as long as you are online and are yourself not killed.

Therefore the best 'defense' for a base is that it is secret.  The first key to secrecy is to build it in an obscure location that other players are unlikely to traverse on their way between wherever they came from and wherever they are going.  That means not putting it near a point of interest or in any area that a player might move through in order to get to a point of interest.  The best locations are also not near any identifiable landmark - such as pathways in the woods or the area with all the roads but no buildings - because anything that CAN draw a player's attention likely WILL draw a player's attention, with increasing frequency depending on how popular the MP server is.

The second key for secrecy is LOS (line of sight).  Building your 'secret' base in the middle of an open field - even if that field is way out in the middle of nowhere - dramatically increases the probability that someone walking by will see it.  Building multiple stories likewise increases that probability because characters can get LOS on a multi story base from a distance even when it is deep inside a forest.  Keep in mind that building a 'roof' for any area of your base constitutes building a second story - remember those stairs you had to build to get up high enough to put down a floor tile as your 'roof'? - and those roof tiles are also visible at a distance.  Building sprawling bases is bad for a similar reason - the more x/y tiles you occupy, the more likely someone randomly passing by will happen upon it.

This means that the best defense for your base (outside of staying online forever and killing every other player that tries to get in) is to build a single story (no Z levels) base with the smallest x/y footprint you can manage way out in the middle of nowhere in the deep forest.  This of course is also likely to be the most inconvenient base to get to and from as well...but that's another issue :)  As far as building a 'secret' base in any existing building on the map...yes, there are places that people usually do not visit but if it is a place YOU have visited, then by definition it is not a place that no one ever visits.  If you went there, someone else might too.  It's all a question of probabilities.

Yeah I know this place in WP. However what about supervisor box, bridge etc How does it make "crashed stairs" model more secure?

I don't play much Multiplayer, not sure if this will work, but how about building a false wall? Take advantage of the isometric view and the fact no one can rotate the map.

Look for places with flat roofs so you can extend the roof using wooden flooring (blue block) then cover the whole roof with same wooden floor to make it look seamless.

(Edit: changed picture to show red outline of floor. Dark red is original map floor. Bright red is your extra space.)

Put all in a bag, put the bag inside a trash can somewhere. Always works to me.

I have this stash, but ... do you mind to look sometime at those trash bins in case someone hides somewhat there? Like I do))
Sometimes, but I only use trashcans really hidden, like in bathrooms, big buildings, etc.

Run a program to identify the thief and virus his ass to oblivion! He breaks your base, you break his PC!!!!

But seriously, as mentioned the best defense is to be out of the way. Some servers have rules to ban thieves but they still get one chance before they are banned. Better to be safe than sorry and make sure they can't find your safehouse.

Thanks for the answers

Guess most of us pay most attention to safe house location, which I assume is function of BASE_LOCATION (some dev language)) in big HIDE_YOUR_ASS strategy.

Another function that may affect to this strategy is BASE_SIZE as Dryke said.

Just imagine you have chosen a super hidden place to build super small base (i.e. two tile base, one tile for crate and one for roof maybe ;) and you are satisfied with distances to main loot areas.

So are you willing to stop thinking about other players, or rather you start functions of PROTECT_YOUR_ASS strategy to physically barricade your small  base as much as possible?

I mean would you use wood walls, crates stacks, lockers, sheet ropes, other tricks to make your stuff impossible to reach by other players in case location of your base revealed?

What about doing what everyone did in Haven and Hearth?

You wall in your safehouse, and the only way in is a sheet rope ladder.  You have a dummy account that you leave inside the base.  When you want to leave the base, you have your real account leave, and log out.  You then log in as the fake account, remove the rope ladder, then log back out.  You log back in as the real account and go about your business.  When you come back, reverse the process.

Intruder only needs to build stairs to get into your place.

And there a ton of good ideas.  But I won't be giving away my secrets here.

I used to keep secrets but now I care more about just fixing the game. Someone mentioned Washroom trash cans, you don't ever use the trash can you toss the bag into a stall and close the door, people are less likely to check all the stalls unless they are specifically looking for goodie bags like what you've dropped.

As for my base idea, you go second floor Gigamart in Westpoint and to the left of you are windows that lead to inside Gigamart, you just build a floor through it and jump through and make a bridge to a place outside peoples line of sight and sledge it after. You've gotta be a great detective to find that base.
