Evolving Zombies

No no, I don't mean L4D style evolution.

For those of you who survive long enough, I'm sure you've noticed just how trivial zombies become when you've wiped the vast majority of them out, especially when - after some time - they become slower and weaker due to decomposition. Now I don't have a problem with that, in fact, it reminds me quite a bit of the Walkin Dead and how the cast of the show, over the period of the series, stop noticing the zombies in the background as they adapt to the post-apocalyptic lifestyle.

However, for people looking to maintain that zombie-fueled terror and make things a little more challenging, I suggest this;

In the 'Zombie Lore' category, specifically under Decomposition, why not add an option which causes zeds to increase in difficulty? Becoming stronger, or faster, or more adept at tracking you down - or all of the above. Something that causes individual zeds to become a bigger threat when the overall population of the undead begins to decline.

This would be amazing

Is it just me? Every time I hear the phrase "zombie evolution" I always think of Natural Selection which leads me to Sexual Reproduction which leads me to the thought of zombies having sex which leads me to the old joke of the hooker who got cancer and had to get a colostomy, but the good news was that she could at least charge more for around the world.

Tell me I'm not alone.

Gorolho used moon stone.

Zombie_pattern_894023 evolved into Zombie_pattern_894024.

No, but serious, I think any kind of theme and subject that follows the "evolving" thing will get into a WWZ kind of thing, where zombies are smart than humans and socialism is a thing.

Well I think a good way to evolve the zombies with time is the decay method, but with some differences.

You see my friends, as the body decays, the flesh of the fingers and teeth become more recessed and eventually look more and more like claws and fangs. This contributed to the whole vampire scam of the dark ages as people were payed money to stab a dead  guy who only showed common decomp, but I digress.

What I am saying is to make it so that they keep the slowing effect, but as they decompose, bite and scratch with more damage to a reasonable point. The decomposition of their flesh should also work towards attracting nearby zombies as well, similar to how their own noises attract them.

So in my conclusion, they would get more fragile and slow with time, but they would increase in horde and group density, and would be significantly more likely to attack with bites or scratch first thing rather than punch, and with greater effect.

One could also increase their intelligence to a point over time, similar to older classic Romero zombies who would have then try to go shopping or drive a Mercedes to their homes in life, or salute crazy bloodthirsty captains in underground bunkers.

Here's my two cents.

There's been my suggestion and talk about corpses, how often they wander, etc. Why not have it so that, over time, the zombies get more trained to the survivors' presence? Just a tiny bit, later on. They wake up out of their stupors faster, from the meal they're eating or the wall they're headbutting. They wake up to you faster, and are more like to investigate.

  • 1 month later...

When it comes to sandbox, more options is always welcome. And I really don't think it would be hard to implement. (I mean, we have slows + weakens, that would basically just need some numbers reversed)

I always wanted to reenact The Land of the Dead scenario (I love that movie personally) I know zombies getting stronger and smarter with time is not realistic but then again neither are walking corpses who feed on thy flesh in general. It would just be fun if there came a day in my sandbox game when zombies learned to open doors and ate me in my sleep because I didn't feel like barricading for the night.

Zombies getting stronger and smarter over time? Sounds like they're becoming human (again).

Would smart zombies eventually learn to use teamwork and pack together?

Am i going to be flanked by a zombie in the woods and have to say, "Clever Girl?"

That's basically what's happening in some of the later Romero flicks. (Not the ones the game is influenced by)
