After looking at a few engines I'm going to carry on with what I have. Torque seems good but is a pain to learn, and anything else I've seen is comparable to the state my engine is in so not really worth my time. It would also be a massive shame to throw away my lovely level editor as well.

I'm start on rearranging some things and reworking some systems this evening, and also I'm going to integrate Farseer far all my physics needs, since form playing about with it for a while today it's very nice.

I'm not suggesting that you use a free engine, more that the engine should be a by-product of the game you're making rather than the focus of your development.

That's a very good approach IMO.

All the games I ended up actually were all coded in a relative hurry with snatching bits and pieces of code from older projects, and every time I started a project by assembling an "engine" first it ended up abandoned and unfinished.

Ideally you should have something playable and fun within 2 weeks, and it should remain fun from that point onwards.
