Cosmetic Character Customisation

Currently in production (as seen in my last blog post) is an “underpants man” version of the character sprites. What does this mean, besides confirmation that the survivors in the apocalypse do indeed still wear underpants..? Well, the screen posted before was the first pass of the anims, the second pass takes it one level further:

Oh dear, no head. The final pass will involve slicing his legs off too. This means that the final “characters” in the game will be assembled from a head, a torso, and legs and clothing will be sliced up similarly. Shirts, trousers, heads, hair, etc. will all be overlaid on these base elements meaning that not only will NPC costumes/look be randomised from these components, but that the player himself will be able to wear any clothing which he finds. And not only that, but he’d be able to have his head lopped off.

These components will also represent “final” character sprite layouts, so any custom mods produced after these have gone into the build which conform to this layout will be “future-proofed” for any further updates. And combined with the modding support currently being added, instead of replacing Baldspot’s permanent look, new costumes can instead be loaded in addition to whatever we put into the game.

Once these are complete, a similar pass will be worked on for the zombies so that any survivor who turns will be a zombiefied version of their human look instead of swapping to a preset “zombie sprite”, and then after that, a set of female equivalents will be produced so that you can choose your gender and meet female survivors in the world.

  1. You are a magnificent man.

I was not looking forward to doing lady sprites for my play as Kate mod, but now I don’t have to. Cannot wait to smother Bob with a pillow. GIRL POWER!

  2. Does that mean that everyone will have a similar build? No fatties?

Will we be able to easily design our own outfits then?

    1. For the foreseeable future, all characters will share one body type but it’s possible that in the future (albeit, quite a way in the future) this could be expanded.

And yes, once the new customisable characters go into the game they’ll be moddable with new costumes able to be added without over-writing existing ones.

  3. Does this mean you can pick up individual body part that have bin cut off ,or dismember bodies so their easier to carry and dispose of.

  4. The ability to set the three layers as random will add a lot to the world. Will you do this with zombies as well? Also, will there still be set clothes for certain characters?

  5. I’ve not seen any updates and the forums seem to be down for me. Are you guys still active in development?

I’ve played the demo a bunch of times over the last few days and I can see the potential of the game, even in pre-alpha and would therefore like to buy it in order to support you guys.

So yeah, are you still active? I’m wondering just because of the forums being offline.

    1. Hmmm… the forums seem to be working fine here. We’re just finishing off the modding support at the moment – we’ve converted all the ‘story’ code into script which can be used as reference for making your own story mods.

Not long now, we’ve just been reluctant to pin down an exact date due to previous slips.

  6. @Binky
It must’ve been a temporary browser error on my end then I presume.

Anyway, since you’re still here devoting time to project zomboid I got my license. It’s not much but every bit helps I guess 🙂 Good luck and happy developing!

    Cheers,
    Grimrath

  7. Ive been thinking, if there is fire in the game, does that mean there will be burned sprites? And in turn to stop yourself dieing in fire will there be another for the stop, drop and roll?
